The Jasenovac Research Institute
presents an educational forum on
JASENOVAC AND THE HOLOCAUST IN YUGOSLAVIA
- A SUPPRESSED CHAPTER IN HOLOCAUST HISTORY
with presentations by
Vladimir Brodich
Survivor of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia
Craig Pearson, M.D.
Director, Jasenovac Research Institute
Barry Lituchy
History Dept., Kingsborough Community College, C.U.N.Y.
National Coordinator of the Jasenovac Research Institute
The Jasenovac death camps, run by the fascist regime in the Independent State of Croatia from 1941 to 1945, was one of the largest concentration camp complexes in the war. Its story however has been neglected by most Holocaust discussions and institutions. Estimates of the men, women and children murdered there range up to 700,000.
This forum presents a general overview of the history of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia and the role of the notorious Jasenovac camps and their significance for contemporary history. It also examines the ways in which this history has been suppressed, distorted or misunderstood, including in recent years. It will consider the need for commemoration and reparations as well as greater education, and open the discussion to the audience. This event provides a rare opportunity to hear the perspective of a Survivor of this largely ignored tragedy.
It will also examine the long term connections between the Holocaust in
Yugoslavia and post-war fascist and Islamic fundamentalist political movements in the Balkans. And it will provide a plan for action for future activities.
WHEN: Sunday, May 18, 2003 from 3:30 - 5:30 PM
(REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 3 PM)
WHERE: Jewish Community Center of Tempe, Arizona
1521 South Indian Bend Road, Tempe, AZ.
