Dear Colleague,

As a long time educator in the New York City Public School system I would like to bring to your attention this new essay contest on the Holocaust which, beginning this year, is offering scholarship money to our high school students. This contest will be available to students on an annual basis. It is being made available by an organization to which I belong, the Jasenovac Research Institute.

The Jasenovac Research Institute was established by the families of those who perished during the Holocaust in Yugoslavia. We are committed to promoting the study of the Holocaust in a broader perspective which takes into account the history of that event in a context that includes the subjects of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity, nationalism, and religious persecution as they affected not only Jews but also other targeted groups such as Romas ("Gypsies"), Serbs, Russians, other Slavic peoples, Communists, Homosexuals, and anti-fascists.

We believe that this unique opportunity to learn about the Holocaust and World War II in all of its dimensions should be brought to your school, and we encourage you to take advantage of it, to inform your students of this opportunity, and to broaden your students’ educational horizons by incorporating it into your curriculum. Our organization is available to provide speakers including educators and Survivors to come and speak to your school, as well as educational materials that you may need, if you so desire.

Please feel free to contact me about this contest or you may contact us through our website.

Sincerely,

Dr. Angelo D’Angelo
